Vehicle Tips: Washing Your Car

Washing the car for many people is one of the dreary tasks that can be put off. In fact, it is a good idea to wash your vehicle once a week to keep dust, dirt, and other contaminants from degrading the paint job and thus ruining the appearance and resale value. Consumer Reports has some excellent tips on how to keep your vehicle clean.

  • It is best to use a dedicated car wash product that is formulated to be used on a painted auto body. Simple soap and water could strip the car wax.
  • Use a sponge and apply it in lengthwise motions across the body of the car, including the top and the hood.
  • Employ a different sponge for the tires. Soap and water may be adequate for getting the dirt and grime from this part of your car, though specialized tire cleaning products are available.
  • Rinse your vehicle thoroughly, one section at a time, starting at the top.
  • Do not depend on the air to dry your car. This process will leave minerals that exist in water that can cause water marks. Use a soft towel, preferably made of terry cloth, and use in a blotting motion to pick up the water. Have several towels on hand.
  • Do not try to wash your car while it is still hot, say soon after it has been driven or when it is in direct sunlight. Heat will cause soap to dry too quickly and can result in unsightly deposits forming.
