Tow Hitches – Get Hooked
Summer time is here; time for sun, fun, and the outdoors! Many of these activities will probably involve recreational vehicles or equipment. This means hooking up things like fifth wheels, boats, utv trailers or an equipment trailer and log trailers (this site will give you more info). While most will rely on a tow truck company to transport these vehicles or equipment, a lot of people prefer a DIY solution.
When it comes to trailer hitches, the wrong set up can put a real kink in your summertime fun. There are trailer hitches, ball mounts, multi-purpose balls, 5th-wheel, hitches, gooseneck hitches, cargo carriers, car jacks and ramps; so many choices it can be mind-numbing. When it comes to the right equipment, this is something you want to get right the first time.
In order to figure out which hitch is right for you, it helps to understand certain terminology:
- Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW): Max weight of empty car
- Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR): Fully loaded vehicle max weight
- Gross Trailer Weight (GTW): Fully loaded trailer weight
- Tongue weight (TW): Downward force on the hitch created by the tongue
- Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR): Weight of the loaded tow vehicle and trailer (everything including the kitchen sink).
Class 1: Jet Ski, motorcycle, bike rack, cargo box, rock collection, etc(GTW: 2,000 lbs)
Class 2: Class 1 items plus: Small size trailer, two ATV’s, small boat, hot dog stand, etc (GTW: 3,500 lbs)
Class 3: Class 1-2 items listed plus medium size trailer, fishing boat, water buffalo, etc (GTW:8,000 lbs)
Class 4: Class 1-3 items listed plus: Large RV, Cattle Trailer, wife’s shoe collection, etc (GTW: 18,000 lbs)
What really determines how much you can haul is the type of vehicle you drive.
Consult your owner’s manual for details on your GVW and GVWR. Also find out what types of hitches are available to mount on your vehicle. Towing capacity measurements are given for guidance and safety. Never test the limits of your vehicle or trailer towing capability or you could be met with some large insurance bills you didn’t count on. If you suspect the vehicle or trailer load you plant to haul is too much, let a towing dublin expert do the job instead. Be smart, be safe, and enjoy making summer memories!
